Tour overview

Lake Natron is a raw, otherworldly corner of the Great Rift Valley, and this three-day trip is made for travelers who want something different from a classic game drive. It suits hikers, photographers, repeat visitors to Tanzania and anyone curious about Maasai country and volcanic landscapes.

You drive from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu on a rough but scenic road through the Rift Valley to the shores of Lake Natron, a shallow soda lake that is a key breeding area for lesser flamingos. Walks with local Maasai guides take you to the flamingo shoreline and up a river gorge to the Engare Sero waterfall, while the cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's Mountain of God and an active volcano, looms over everything.

You stay at a comfortable tented camp near the lake, with your private guide and vehicle for the whole trip.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Arusha to Lake Natron

Leave Arusha in the morning and drive about 2 hours to Mto wa Mbu, where the tarmac ends. From here, a rough, dusty road heads north through the Rift Valley for roughly 3 more hours, passing Maasai settlements, wandering livestock and occasional giraffe or zebra on the open plains. The scenery becomes ever more dramatic as the cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai rises ahead. Stop for a picnic lunch along the way and arrive at your camp near Engare Sero in the afternoon. After settling in, take a short walk or simply relax and watch the sunset paint the volcano and escarpment before dinner.

Day 2Flamingo Shore Walk and Engare Sero Waterfall

Start early with a walk led by a local Maasai guide across the mudflats toward the shore of Lake Natron, where flocks of lesser flamingos often feed in the shallows. Look out for pelicans and other waterbirds, and for the ancient human footprints preserved near Engare Sero, which can be visited on request. Return to camp for breakfast and a rest during the heat of the day. In the afternoon, hike up a narrow river gorge, wading through streams and scrambling over rocks, to reach the Engare Sero waterfall, where you can cool off in the pool. Return for a sunset view of Ol Doinyo Lengai and dinner.

Day 3Lake Natron to Arusha

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with views over the lake and escarpment, then begin the return journey south through the Rift Valley. The drive back to Mto wa Mbu takes about 3 hours on the rough road, offering one more chance to photograph the volcanic landscape and Maasai herders. In Mto wa Mbu, you can stop for lunch and, if time allows, a short walk through the village's banana plantations and markets. Continue on tarmac for about 2 hours to Arusha, where you will be dropped at your hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Can I climb Ol Doinyo Lengai on this trip?

The summit climb is a demanding night hike on steep, loose ground and is not included in this itinerary. It can sometimes be arranged as an add-on for fit hikers, depending on volcanic activity and conditions.

Will I definitely see flamingos at Lake Natron?

Flamingos are usually present in some numbers, but how many and how close depends on water levels and the season. Your local guide will take you to the best areas on the day.

Can Lake Natron be combined with a Serengeti safari?

Yes. A track runs from Lake Natron through Loliondo to the northern Serengeti, so Natron fits well into a longer safari. Ask us about our extended itineraries that include it.
