Tour overview

Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar, is one of Tanzania's best-kept secrets: a quiet, unspoiled island with no big resorts, surrounded by the protected reefs of Mafia Island Marine Park. From roughly October to March, whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, usually gather in the plankton-rich waters off Kilindoni, offering the chance to snorkel beside them in calm conditions.

This short fly-in trip is built around that encounter. With a licensed local boat crew and guide, you head out to find the whale sharks and slip into the water to swim alongside them, following responsible viewing guidelines. The rest of your stay is for snorkeling the marine park's coral gardens in Chole Bay, visiting the ruins and baobabs on Chole Island, and enjoying a peaceful lodge by the water.

It suits nature lovers, keen snorkelers and anyone adding a unique wildlife experience to a Zanzibar holiday or safari.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Fly to Mafia Island and Chole Bay

Board your morning light aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam, about 30 to 40 minutes, or from Zanzibar, a little longer, to Kilindoni airstrip on Mafia Island. Your lodge driver meets you for the drive of about 30 minutes across the island to Utende on the shores of Chole Bay, the heart of Mafia Island Marine Park. After lunch and time to settle in, join an afternoon snorkeling trip on the bay's coral reefs, or take a short boat ride to Chole Island to wander among its ruined buildings and giant baobabs. Enjoy dinner at the lodge.

Day 2Whale shark snorkeling off Kilindoni

After an early breakfast, transfer to Kilindoni on the island's west coast, where the whale sharks usually feed close to shore during the season. Board a boat with a licensed local crew and guide and, once a whale shark is spotted, slip quietly into the water to snorkel alongside it, keeping a respectful distance and never touching. Encounters can last several minutes, and multiple sharks are often seen. Return to the lodge for lunch, then spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach or by the pool.

Day 3Marine park snorkeling and flight back

Enjoy a final morning in the water with a boat trip to one of the marine park's reefs or sandbanks, depending on tides, to snorkel among hard and soft corals, reef fish and, with luck, turtles. Return to the lodge for a shower and an early lunch, then transfer to Kilindoni airstrip for your flight back to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, connecting with your onward travel. This is the end of your Mafia Island whale shark trip.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to see whale sharks on Mafia?

Whale sharks are usually present from about October to March, with November to February often the most reliable. Outside this window, sightings are rare.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You should be comfortable snorkeling in open water, as the sharks move and you may need to swim to keep up. Life jackets and guidance are provided, and you can stay on the boat if you prefer.

Can I combine this with Zanzibar or a safari?

Yes. Mafia connects easily by light aircraft to Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, so it fits well before or after a Zanzibar beach stay or a southern Tanzania safari.
