How Far in Advance Should You Book a Tanzania Safari?
Ideal booking windows for Tanzania safaris by season, what to reserve first, and how to plan successfully when you are booking at short notice.
Safari lodges and camps in Tanzania have a limited number of rooms, and many of the most sought-after properties are small. That means the timing of your booking can matter as much as your choice of park.
Here is how far ahead we recommend booking for different times of year, along with what to secure first and how to make a last-minute trip work.
Quick tips
- Book peak-season and holiday safaris nine to twelve months ahead if you can.
- Secure Serengeti and crater rim accommodation before anything else.
- Buy travel insurance with cancellation cover as soon as you pay your deposit.
- Stay flexible on lodges and park order when booking at short notice.
- Check that the names on your booking exactly match your passports.
Peak season: book early
For July, August, September and the Christmas and New Year period, we recommend booking nine to twelve months ahead where possible. These dates coincide with school holidays in many countries and with the Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti, so the camps best placed for the migration fill quickly.
The calving season in the southern Serengeti, around February, is also in high demand, particularly at camps near Ndutu.
If you are traveling as a family or a larger group, add extra time again. Family rooms, connecting tents and properties able to take several rooms on the same nights are limited, and they are often the first to go. Early booking also gives you the widest choice of guide and vehicle arrangements for a private safari.
Shoulder and green seasons
For months such as June, October, November, January and March, six months ahead is usually comfortable, although popular small camps can still sell out. During April and May, the quietest months, three months is often enough, and some guests book closer to departure. Keep in mind that a number of seasonal camps close in the long rains, which reduces choice even when demand is lower.
What to secure first
Not every part of a trip needs booking at the same time. Prioritize the elements with the least availability.
- Accommodation in the Serengeti, particularly migration-area camps.
- Ngorongoro Crater rim lodges, which are limited in number.
- Kilimanjaro climb dates if you are combining a trek, especially around full moons and holidays.
- International flights, once your safari dates are confirmed.
- Domestic light aircraft seats for southern or fly-in itineraries.
Booking at short notice
A last-minute safari is still possible. Flexibility is your biggest asset: being open to alternative lodges, a different park order or a slightly different date range gives your operator room to work. Mid-range lodges and mobile tented camps often have more availability than small, high-end camps.
Do not leave paperwork to the last moment, though. Allow enough time to apply for your visa through the official portal and to see a travel clinic about vaccinations.
Protecting your booking
Before paying a deposit, read the terms carefully: deposit amount, balance due date and cancellation policy. Buy travel insurance with cancellation cover as soon as you book, not just before you leave, so you are protected from the start. Keep all confirmations in one place and check that names match your passport exactly.
It is also worth asking your operator how changes are handled after booking. Lodges have their own policies on date changes, and knowing in advance what is flexible and what is not makes it much easier to adjust if your plans shift. A good operator will explain these terms clearly before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a better deal by booking late?
Occasionally, but it is not reliable in Tanzania. Late availability tends to be limited, especially in peak months, so booking early usually gives better choice rather than higher prices.
Is it too late to book a safari three months out?
No. Three months is often workable, especially outside peak season. You may need to be flexible on specific camps or dates.
Should I book flights before my safari?
We recommend confirming your safari dates and accommodation first, then booking flights to match. That avoids being locked into dates when lodges are full.
