Passport Validity Rules for Travel to Tanzania
What to check on your passport before traveling to Tanzania, including validity, blank pages, damage, name matching and when to renew it.
It sounds obvious, but passport problems are among the most common reasons travelers are turned away at check-in. Airlines are responsible for carrying passengers who meet entry rules, so they check closely and will refuse boarding if your passport falls short.
Before you book flights or apply for your visa, take five minutes to inspect your passport against the points below. Then confirm the current requirements for your nationality with official sources.
Quick tips
- Check that your passport is valid for at least six months after you leave Tanzania.
- Keep at least two blank visa pages, and more for multi-country trips.
- Replace a damaged passport before you travel rather than risk refusal.
- Make sure your passport, visa and tickets all use the same name.
- Renew first, then apply for your visa with the new passport number.
Validity: plan for six months
Tanzania generally requires your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay. Count from your departure date from Tanzania, not your arrival date. If you are combining Tanzania with other countries, check each country's rule and make sure you meet the strictest one for the whole journey.
If your passport is close to the limit, renew it before applying for your visa. Your e-visa is linked to a specific passport number, so a new passport after approval can create complications.
Blank pages
You will need blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps. We recommend having at least two completely blank pages, and more if your trip includes several border crossings, such as a combined Kenya and Tanzania itinerary. Pages marked for endorsements or amendments may not count as visa pages, so check which pages are actually blank and usable.
Damage and wear
Airlines and immigration officers can refuse a passport that looks damaged or tampered with. Look closely for problems that are easy to overlook.
- Water damage or warped pages.
- Torn, loose or missing pages.
- A peeling or scratched photo page.
- A damaged cover or chip, if your passport has one.
- Unofficial markings, stickers or notes on the pages.
Names and multiple passports
The name on your passport must match your flight tickets, visa and travel insurance exactly. If you have recently married or changed your name, make sure all bookings use the name in the passport you will carry.
Dual nationals should travel on the same passport they used for the visa application, and present that passport at both check-in and immigration. Mixing passports between entry and exit can cause confusion and delays.
If you need to renew
Passport processing times in many countries rise sharply before the summer holidays, so start early if renewal is needed. Once you have the new passport, update your booking details with your operator and airlines, and then apply for your visa.
Keep a photocopy and a digital scan of your new passport separate from the original, in case it is lost or stolen during your trip.
If time is very short, look into your country's expedited or urgent passport service, and allow for the visa application afterward. It is far better to adjust travel dates slightly than to arrive at the airport with a passport that does not meet the rules. Let your operator know early if renewal could affect your plans, so bookings can be updated in good time.
Frequently asked questions
Is six months validity counted from arrival or departure?
We recommend counting from your departure date from Tanzania to be safe. Confirm the current rule for your nationality with official sources before you travel.
Can I travel if my passport is slightly damaged?
It is risky. Airlines and immigration officers can refuse passports that look damaged, so it is safer to replace it before your trip.
I renewed my passport after getting my e-visa. What now?
Contact Tanzania Immigration through the official portal for guidance, as the visa is tied to your old passport number. Carry both passports if advised to do so.
