What Is Included in a Tanzania Safari Price?

Safari quotes can look similar but include very different things; here is what a typical Tanzania safari price covers and what usually costs extra.

Money & Budget · 4 min read

Two safari quotes for the same number of days can differ a lot, and the reason is often hidden in the small print. One may include drinks and airport transfers, while another lists them as extras. Understanding what is usually included helps you compare like with like.

Here is how a typical Tanzania safari is priced, based on how we and most reputable operators put trips together.

Quick tips

  • Ask for written inclusions and exclusions with every quote.
  • Check whether park fees are included and match your itinerary.
  • Confirm the drinks and laundry policy at each lodge.
  • Budget separately for tips, visas and insurance.
  • Compare whether the vehicle is private or shared with other travelers.

What is usually included

A standard private or small-group safari package normally covers the core of your trip:

Inclusions should always be written into your itinerary or quote. If a detail matters to you, such as a guaranteed window seat in the vehicle, a charging point for camera batteries or a cooler box for cold drinks, ask before you book rather than assuming.

  • A safari vehicle, usually a 4x4 with a pop-up roof, plus fuel.
  • A professional driver-guide for the duration of the safari.
  • Park, conservation, concession and related government fees for the itinerary.
  • Accommodation as listed, whether camping, tented camps or lodges.
  • Meals during the safari, often full board in the parks.
  • Drinking water in the vehicle.
  • Arrival and departure transfers, when stated in the itinerary.

What is often excluded

Some costs are rarely included because they depend on your choices or your home country. These typically include international flights, visas, travel insurance, vaccinations and personal items.

Tips for your guide, cook and lodge staff are usually not included, as tipping is personal. Optional activities such as hot-air balloon flights over the Serengeti, cultural visits and walking safaris may also be extra unless they are written into your itinerary.

Charges for photography or drone use can also apply. Drones require permits in Tanzania and are generally not allowed in national parks without specific permission, so do not pack one expecting to fly it on safari.

The grey areas: drinks, laundry and accommodation nights

Drinks policies vary widely. Some camps include soft drinks, house wine and beer; others charge for every drink apart from water. Laundry can be complimentary, limited or charged per item. Hotel nights in Arusha before and after the safari may or may not be part of the package.

The basis of the room matters too. Prices are usually per person sharing a double or twin room, so traveling alone can mean a single supplement. Check whether meals in town are included, since full board in the parks does not always extend to hotel nights.

Domestic flights and Zanzibar extensions

If your itinerary includes a fly-in safari or a trip to Zanzibar, domestic flights may be included or quoted separately. Light aircraft on safari routes usually have strict baggage limits and often require soft-sided bags, so check the details before you pack.

Zanzibar's mandatory inbound travel insurance is generally arranged by the traveler, not the safari operator, unless your quote says otherwise.

How to compare quotes

Ask every operator for a clear list of inclusions and exclusions. Compare the number of game drive days, the type and location of accommodation, whether the vehicle is private or shared and whether the guide is exclusive to your group.

A slightly higher price that includes everything you need often works out better value than a low headline price with many extras. We are always happy to talk through any element of a quote.

Finally, look at payment terms, deposit amounts and the cancellation policy. These details affect the real value of a quote just as much as the price itself.
