Tour overview

Not everyone has a week to climb Kilimanjaro, but anyone in reasonable shape can walk on its slopes. This day hike follows the first stage of the Marangu Route from the park gate through lush montane rainforest to Mandara Hut, the first overnight stop for climbers, and on to the rim of Maundi Crater.

The trail is well maintained and gently graded, winding past giant ferns, mossy trees and streams. Keep watch for blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus overhead. From Maundi Crater, a short walk beyond Mandara, the forest opens up and, when the clouds part, you can see across the plains toward Kenya and up toward the mountain's upper slopes.

The hike suits active travelers, families with older children, and anyone wanting to experience Kilimanjaro before or after a safari.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking uphill for several hours on a good trail. No climbing experience is needed, and your guide sets a steady pace suited to your group.

Will I see the summit of Kilimanjaro?

The summit is usually hidden from the forest trail, but on clear days you may glimpse the upper mountain from Maundi Crater or from Marangu village. Early-morning views from Moshi are often the best.

Can children join?

Older children who enjoy hiking usually manage well. Please tell us their ages when booking so we can confirm park rules and plan the pace.
