Horombo Huts Camp
Horombo Huts Camp is a well-known accommodation site along Mount Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route. It offers both wooden cabin lodging and a designated area for tents, making it a convenient stop for climbers.
Located along the Marangu Route, Horombo Huts Camp is the second campsite from the starting point at Marangu Gate. It serves as a resting point for climbers ascending to the summit as well as those descending after their trek. Additionally, hikers coming down via the Rongai Route also use this campsite.
A key advantage of staying at Horombo Huts Camp is its reliable water supply, thanks to a nearby stream. It is one of the few camps on Mount Kilimanjaro that features water closets (W.C.) and working bathroom sinks, adding to the comfort of climbers.
The accommodation consists of A-frame wooden huts, each capable of housing 6-8 people. Though these cabins are not self-contained, the entire campsite can accommodate up to 120 climbers at a time.
Horombo Huts Camp Facilities:
- A mess hall for dining
- A ranger’s office hut
- A kitchen hut for meal preparation
- Separate accommodation for porters and mountain guides
Location of Horombo Huts Camp
Situated on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, Horombo Huts Camp is perched atop Mawenzi’s ridges. Mawenzi is the third highest peak after Kibo on Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. The campsite is positioned at the edge of Kilimanjaro’s moorland zone, right before the alpine desert begins.
Due to high humidity and frequent rainfall in this region, the campsite is often damp, making it difficult to dry wet clothes. The trails and rocks around the area are also muddy and slippery as a result.
Just a short walk from the camp is Zebra Rocks, a popular acclimatization spot for hikers following the 6 day Marangu Route itinerary.
Why Horombo Huts Camp is used for Acclimatization
Many climbers begin experiencing altitude sickness at this point, making it an essential stop for acclimatization before continuing the ascent. Its sloped location offers some protection from the strong winds commonly experienced at high elevations.
The previous campsite before Horombo is Mandara Huts, while the next accommodation point for climbers continuing their journey is Kibo Hut.
How to Reach Horombo Huts Camp
The best way to get to Horombo Huts Camp is by hiking along the Marangu Route. Another option is to cycle to the campsite, making it a unique and adventurous way to experience Mount Kilimanjaro’s landscape.
