Maundi crater on Mount Kilimanjaro

Maundi Crater on Mount Kilimanjaro is a small, extinct volcanic crater near Mandara Huts Camp. Formed by past volcanic activity, it has little vegetation due to its barren volcanic soil, though a few plants can be found in the lower areas.
Hiking to Maundi Crater offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. It is a popular acclimatization spot for climbers on the Marangu Route, especially for those who reach Mandara Huts early on the first day. Some also visit the crater as a short detour before heading to Horombo Huts on the second day.
Located about a kilometer from Mandara Huts, the crater is within the rainforest zone. The hike from the campsite takes only 15 minutes but is not always included in standard itineraries. Climbers must arrange this excursion in advance with their Kilimanjaro guide.
One Day Hike to the Maundi crater on Mount Kilimanjaro
A one-day hike to Maundi Crater begins with a drive to Marangu Gate, followed by a 3-4 hour trek through lush rainforest to Mandara Huts. Along the way, hikers can spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species. From Mandara, a short walk leads to the crater, offering panoramic views, including distant sights of Kenya when the weather is clear.
The best time to visit Maundi Crater is during the dry seasons, from January to early March and June to October, when visibility is highest. After enjoying the views and taking photos, hikers descend back to Marangu Gate and return to their accommodations.
