Where to See the Big Five in Tanzania

A park-by-park guide to finding lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino in Tanzania, plus how to build an itinerary that gives you a real shot at all five.

The Big Five started life as a hunters' list of the most dangerous animals to track on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Today it is a photographer's checklist, and northern Tanzania is one of the best places in Africa to try to complete it in a single trip.

No park guarantees all five, and wildlife does not keep a schedule. But some places stack the odds heavily in your favor, and knowing where each animal is most reliably found helps you plan a route that makes sense rather than one that just looks good on a map.

Quick tips

  • Spend at least three nights in the Serengeti to give leopard sightings time to happen.
  • Pack good binoculars, because crater rhinos are often seen at long range.
  • Start game drives early, when cats are most active and the light is soft.
  • Tell your guide your wildlife priorities at the start of the trip, not the end.
  • Enjoy everything else you see; the Big Five are only a small part of a safari.

Ngorongoro Crater: your best chance for rhino

The black rhino is the hardest of the five to find anywhere in East Africa, and the Ngorongoro Crater is the most dependable place in Tanzania to see one. The crater floor is a self-contained world of grassland, swamp and forest, and a small, closely protected population of black rhino lives there.

Sightings are often at a distance, so binoculars matter. The crater is also excellent for lion, buffalo and elephant (mostly older bulls), which is why many travelers tick off four of the five in one game drive. Leopard is the one the crater rarely delivers.

Serengeti: lion and leopard country

The Serengeti is famous for big cats. Lions are widespread, and cheetah hunt the open plains. For leopard, our guides concentrate on the Seronera area in the central Serengeti, where the river is lined with sausage trees and acacias that leopards use to rest and stash kills.

Buffalo and elephant are common across much of the park. Rhino are present in the Serengeti in very small numbers, but sightings are rare, so we never plan a Serengeti trip around them.

Tarangire and Lake Manyara: elephants and buffalo

Tarangire National Park is one of the best places in the country for elephants, especially in the dry months, roughly June to October, when large herds gather along the Tarangire River. Buffalo are common too, and lions are regularly seen.

Lake Manyara is smaller, with groundwater forest, elephants, buffalo and good birdlife. It works well as a short first or last stop on a northern circuit trip.

Southern Tanzania

Ruaha and Nyerere (formerly the Selous) offer a wilder feel and fewer vehicles. Both are strong for lion, elephant and buffalo, and leopard is seen regularly in Ruaha. Rhino sightings in the south are rare, so a southern-only trip is not the best choice if all five are your priority.

How to plan for all five

A classic northern circuit that includes Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and at least two or three nights in the Serengeti gives most travelers a realistic chance at the full set. More nights in fewer places almost always beats rushing between parks.

Ask your guide what you most want to see on day one. Good guides read tracks, listen to alarm calls and talk to other drivers, and they can shape each drive around your priorities.

Remember that the Big Five are only part of the story. Cheetah, giraffe, hippo, wild dog in the south and countless birds can easily become the highlights of your trip, so it is worth keeping an open mind on every drive.

  • Lion: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire
  • Leopard: central Serengeti around Seronera, Ruaha
  • Elephant: Tarangire, Serengeti, Lake Manyara
  • Buffalo: almost every major park
  • Rhino: Ngorongoro Crater

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Big Five in one day in Tanzania?

It is possible in the Ngorongoro Crater, but leopard is rarely seen there, so it is unusual. Most travelers who complete the list do so over several days across the crater and the Serengeti.

What is the best time of year to see the Big Five?

The dry season, roughly June to October, makes animals easier to find because vegetation thins and wildlife gathers near water. That said, the Big Five can be seen year-round in the northern parks.

Is rhino guaranteed in the Ngorongoro Crater?

No. The crater offers the best odds in Tanzania, but rhinos are few and wide-ranging. Allow a full day on the crater floor to improve your chances.
