Tour overview

Mnemba Atoll, off Zanzibar's northeast coast, is protected as the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area and is widely regarded as the best snorkeling site on the island. Shallow reefs surround the small island, with clear, warm water full of coral, reef fish, starfish and, often, green turtles.

This half-day trip is easy to fit into a beach holiday. A short boat ride takes you out to the reef, where your guide leads you to the best spots for your group's ability. Dolphins are frequently seen in the area, especially in the early morning.

It is an excellent choice for families, first-time snorkelers and experienced swimmers alike. Note that Mnemba Island itself is private, so the trip focuses on the reefs around it.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Morning boat trip to Mnemba Atoll

Your driver picks you up from your hotel at around 7:30 am and takes you to the departure beach, usually at Matemwe or Nungwi depending on where you stay. After fitting your mask and fins, board the boat for the ride of about 20 to 45 minutes to Mnemba Atoll, watching for dolphins on the way. Spend roughly 2 hours snorkeling at two or three spots on the reef, with your guide pointing out coral, parrotfish, angelfish, starfish and turtles. Between swims, relax on the boat with fresh tropical fruit and cold water. The boat returns to shore late morning, and you are back at your hotel around 12:30 pm, with the afternoon free.

Frequently asked questions

Is this trip good for beginners?

Yes. Many snorkeling spots around the atoll are shallow and calm, and the guide helps beginners with equipment and technique. Life jackets are available.

Can we swim with dolphins?

Dolphins are often seen around Mnemba, but we watch them respectfully from the boat and do not chase them. Seeing them is a bonus rather than a guarantee.

Is diving available?

Scuba diving at Mnemba can be arranged separately through a licensed dive center. Let us know your certification level and we can help plan it.
