Tour overview
Zanzibar's history and flavor are tied to spices, and a visit to a working spice farm is one of the island's most enjoyable experiences. Just outside Stone Town, a local farm guide walks you through plots of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper, vanilla, cardamom, lemongrass and turmeric, explaining how each is grown, harvested and used in cooking and traditional remedies.
Along the way you crush, smell and taste fresh spices straight from the plant, then sample seasonal tropical fruits such as jackfruit, mangoes, pineapple and rambutan. Many visitors leave with a woven palm-leaf crown and a bag of spices to take home.
For a deeper experience, add a Swahili cooking session, preparing a spiced lunch with a local family. The tour suits all ages and fits easily into a day in Stone Town.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1Half-day spice farm tour
Your driver collects you from your hotel at about 9:00 am (or 2:00 pm for the afternoon option) for the drive of around 30 minutes inland to a spice farm in the Kizimbani area. Your farm guide leads you along shady paths, stopping at clove trees, nutmeg, cinnamon bark, black pepper vines, vanilla orchids and lemongrass. You crush leaves, peel bark and taste as you go, while hearing how spices shaped the island's history. Finish with a tasting of seasonal tropical fruit and a chance to buy spices directly from the farm. If you choose the cooking option, stay on to prepare and eat a spiced Swahili lunch with a local family before returning to Stone Town.
