Zebra Rocks on Mount Kilimanjaro

Zebra Rocks on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Zebra Rocks on Mount Kilimanjaro are a set of big volcanic rocks found on the Marangu route. The rocks have stripes that resemble the patterns found on zebras.

These striking formations result from mineral-rich rainwater flowing over volcanic rock, creating the distinctive striped appearance.

For climbers taking the 6 day Marangu Route, a hike to Zebra Rocks on the third day serves as an acclimatization stop before returning to Horombo Huts Camp.

This helps hikers adjust to the altitude before continuing their ascent. However, the 5 day Marangu Route does not include this acclimatization hike, as climbers proceed directly to Horombo Huts.

Zebra Rocks are located about a 30-minute walk from Horombo Huts on the way to Mawenzi Camp. They sit near the transition between the moorland and alpine desert zones of Mount Kilimanjaro. Being on the leeward side of the mountain, the area is relatively dry with occasional rainfall and home to small wildlife such as birds and rodents.

The only way to reach Zebra Rocks is by hiking, making it a rewarding short trek for climbers looking to improve acclimatization and experience one of Kilimanjaro’s unique natural features.

How are Zebra Rocks on Mount Kilimanjaro formed?

Zebra rocks, which are primarily lava cliffs, were created when mineral-rich rainwater ran down on the rocks and partially turned them white or black in some areas.
